ABOUT

US

At Context of Things, sourcing beautiful objects is in our blood.
We’ve been inspired to make, seek, and find them for over 50 years.

Meena, now 76, started us on this path back in the early 1970s, by importing exquisite hand-crafted brass objects from India. Her beloved husband Sam, a civil engineer, joined her, thinking there was more to this than building bridges. Together they brought melded metals and sustainable woods, objects of wonder, to American shores.

So followed their sons, Raj and Ash into the business, and further enlisted the distinct talents of their spouses. Gauri, with her tech-giant savvy from Apple & Yahoo! and Sonal, a strategist in retail’s high echelons, have broadened the horizons, crafting new décor conduits between tradition and modernity.

Five decades of diligent collaborations resulted trusted relationships, forged with vendors and clients worldwide. Among our proudest achievements is our long-standing partnership with retail icon Louis Vuitton. Inevitably, this passionately enduring journey inspired us to create Context of Things, our latest trade direct-to-consumer venture.

Our creative team at Context of Things has worked with and for many a visionary brand including Boucheron, Veuve Clicquot, ABSOLUT, Williams Sonoma and Restoration Hardware. Context of Things is a retail brand with a mission to collaborate with interior designers and design aficionados alike, sharing the benefits and privileges of artisanal and sourcing relationships fostered over time.

As avid global travelers, we immerse in the rich & diverse cultures of this world. We find joy in bringing artistry, talent, design aesthetics and sustainably sourced materials into the beautiful objects we source.
We have an enviable black book of over 250 dEcor vendors, in countries known for their uniquely exceptional artisanal expertise;
from Indonesia, India, and Vietnam, to France, Spain, Italy and England. Many of our MADE items are created by our talented artisans in India, birthplace of our family’s proud heritage, and a place that evokes deep love of her history, admiration for her aesthetics, and gratitude for the warm sensibility of its people.

We’re an agile resource, offering an additional pair of hands for interior designers and design managers, allowing them to pass on custom, one of a kind, or hard to find items to their end clients. Our approach very much embraces the concept of 'accessible bespoke,' merging the exclusive with the attainable.
We love supplying or collaborating on projects, or simply delivering a single piece to a jigsaW.

HOW WE
DO Things

SEARCH

We are deliberate in our choices, and we’re defined by our commitment to bring beautiful objects to the table. We have a discerning eye, and scour the globe for artists and artisans who share our thinking. We never know what’s around the corner, and that drives us to look.

CREATE

We love to make, to modify. We use raw materials, ancient, never modern. They have a spirit that modern materials cannot equate. We’re also creating a stage, a space, to shine light on pieces we find.

PROVENANCE

The dictionary definition is ‘the beginning of something's existence; something's origin.’ All the pieces we make, or the art and objects we curate have it. They are defined by time. Every hand that touches the wood, stone or metal, guiding the pieces to the light of our showroom, have experience and wisdom ingrained in them.

WHY
CONTEXT?

Location
Location
Location
...as the saying goes
That’s true of anything, not just real estate, as a gardener would say ‘A weed is just a plant in the wrong place’.
Everything in context. We understand the vitality of balance. Black can’t exist without White, and Ying is bored without Yang. Take life partners. One might be more artisan, rustic in taste, the other’s heart might sing when immersed in polished concrete and glass. ‘Discussions’ are had, but their tastes are bedfellows too.
Something interesting happens when tastes come together: Contrast and energy.
Ask any chef.

IT fits.

IT WORKS.

It fits.
It works.
Take an ancient Indian door; it may be rehung as the entrance to a NY brownstone’s kitchen, at the end of a blood red hallway.
It fits, it works.
Imagine the buyer, we’ll call him Mr A, was distracted at the moment he laid eyes on it, missing the opportunity. It was purchased by another, let’s call her Mrs B.
B hung it, without hinge, as a work of art. Resplendent and backlit above a sofa in a polished, minimal space floating in the California hills.

It fits, it works.
The contexts could not be more different, but that’s what’s beautiful.
And you should know, perhaps you live with one.
